This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English literature to 12th graders in a public high school on Chicago's northwest side. My students are much more successful when they are reading books about genuinely interesting topics. They deserve to be reading sophisticated, provocative, relevant texts, but unfortunately, my school is not always able to purchase new books.

My students are urban, smart, and curious; they crave texts which complement their own experiences but also encourage them to think critically.

Texts which relate to my students' daily lives but also push them to ask deep questions are essential. Students should see themselves in the texts they read and be exposed to stories which resonate with their own. The novel American Street is culturally relevant reading. This Donors Choose project, if funded, will provide two class sets of this novel that my senior students can read and use for years to come.

My Project

After more than a year of learning on screens, I am hoping to put a beautiful new book into the hands of each of my high school students. Coming back to the classroom will be less challenging if students have an engrossing, relevant novel to smooth the transition.

The book American Street is written in language that is appealing to the teenage students I teach, and the story is both profound and important.

High-school-aged Fabiola and her mother are traveling to Detroit from their native Haiti when Faby's mother is detained by U.S, customs. Faby is thus forced to navigate her American cousins and an unfamiliar culture on her own.
