My Students

Our fourth grade social studies curriculum in New York requires that students comprehend life during the time of Native Americans through the American Revolution in the thirteen colonies. This expansive time period is incredibly interesting to learn and teach, but it can also be overwhelming.

With the addition of non-fiction texts, students can use primary and secondary sources in order to visualize and create connections between the information they are learning.

History is clear and consecutive, yet without the proper resources that are age-appropriate for students, the content can become unclear. Unlike other students their age, my class loves history and the endless possibilities that these subjects offer. Recently, our class had a field trip to the New York Historical Society. They were eager to share the information with the tour guide and prove their knowledge. Upon seeing their energetic passion towards these subjects, I knew that our class library desperately needs non-fiction texts about the content they're learning.

My Project

I would like to add these requested texts to our classroom library in order to encourage students to explore our social studies units further. These resources would answer some of the questions that students have about the historical timeline in the United States.

My students are eager and curious children who enjoy learning.

I teach at a Title 1 school, meaning that nearly all of my students live below the nation-wide poverty line. Beyond the classroom, my students rarely interact with historical and informational texts. These new resources would excite the students' naturally inquisitive minds and motivate them to explore topics beyond my explicit teachings.
