Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students and I are in an inner-city immigrant neighborhood in Queens, New York. We are a Title I school where English is the second language. My students come from various countries and we enjoy learning about each other. I also enjoy helping their parents, who have little or limited English, the same way teachers helped me and my parents when I first came to second grade.

My Project

I have previously used a single copy of the books Happy Birthday Martin Luther King and The Story of Ruby Bridges as read-alouds to introduce the civil rights movement and to learn more information about these two American heroes. Students always ask me for these books to take home in their book baggy. I find the stories are told in a way that is appropriate for the lower grades. Many students want to read these stories even if the stories are a bit above their reading level. Therefore, I want to put a book in the hands of each of my students so they get a chance to share what they are reading and learning about with their families. Then we brainstorm the important details and write about what we learned. With some students, this leads to essay writing.
