My Students

Heroes make a difference in people’s lives with their words, actions, and discoveries. A hero is a person who has done something brave or important. A hero is someone to look up to and this project will help us learn about important American heroes.

The students in my classroom are high achieving 2nd graders who love to come to school.

Our school community is close knit and we enjoy the our changing population. My students have diverse cultural backgrounds and interests, but we all are excited to earn from one another. We enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing our knowledge with each other. We enjoy using our critical thinking skills to evaluate new information and make judgments about what is important. We know that integrating the arts allows us to make personal connections to our learning and demonstrate what we know in creative ways.

My Project

In second grade students study people who make a difference. To extend tour learning, we want to implement an American Heroes unit that will build a strong sense of community as we learn about American heroes, create art projects, and put on a patriotic performance for our parents. The biography books will be used in flexible groups to research heroes. The books are written at a second grade level and will make the content accessible to all my students. We will use the pastels and paper to create portraits of our heroes. At the conclusion of our unit, we will have a patriotic parent performance in the multipurpose room. We will use the requested decorations as well as the student's portraits to make the MPR more festive for our performance. This unit is a great way for our second graders to learn more about the great leaders of our country as well as display what they know in creative ways.

Collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking are the cornerstones of any good project.

This project weaves these three principles together as my students work together in order to learn more about an American Hero and then share their learning with their peers.
