My Students

Our students are the the hardest working teenagers around. They are inquisitive, excited about their learning and eager for new experiences. They travel from across the city to attend our school, some commuting hours a day even as they balance significant responsibilities outside of school.

Most of our students are from immigrant families, many will be the first in their families to attend college, and almost half qualify for free and reduced lunch.

At our school, they tackle a challenging curriculum, learn two languages (on top of the numerous languages many of them already speak), read classical texts, push themselves to excel as public speakers and throughout, they support and encourage each other.

Our kids don't always have the resources to get every opportunity we'd love them to have, but we see how they eagerly jump on the chance to be exposed to the arts, take on internships, and volunteer to help others when presented with those experiences.

My Project

Our 11th grade American literature students do a focused study of plays. In the past, we've been limited by the school's book budget to only exposing them to two plays: Arthur Miller's Death of A Salesman and August Wilson's Fences. While these are amazing works, we've felt like they're missing other incredible voices from American theater that we want them to know. Last year, we piloted a unit where students chose from a selection of by American playwrights including The Laramie Project and A Raisin in the Sun, and worked in literature circles to read and explore those plays together--they did character analysis, created set designs, did historical research about the contexts of the plays and then created independent presentations exploring an aspect of the play together. We found that the ability to choose a writer and topic that spoke to them increased their engagement and excitement in the unit and that the presentations they did at the end of the unit were better because of it.

We want to include plays that reflect the diversity of American life and raise big questions for our students to grapple with. With that in mind, we're also hoping to share Tony Kushner's Angels in America and John Patrick Shanley's Doubt with them, neither of which is available through our school's purchasing process.

Both plays ask our students to look at complicated ethical and questions and to understand a time, place and community that's not necessarily their own.

Our students embrace the chance to choose texts that speak to them and to take pride in the opportunity to teach their classmates about the plays they choose. Their presentations have included song, visual arts, dance, film, monologue and even puppet shows, and we're so excited to be able to expand the choices we offer.
