Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Independent Study students meet with me once per week for instruction, collaboration, practice and assessment of skills in 3 to 4 classes at a time. They start the next set of 3-4 classes half way through the semester, to complete 6 classes per semester. If they have the academic ability to do more, they can make up credits as well.

Our students attend Independent Study school for a variety of reasons, such as the need to work or care for a family member.

Some students have health issues, or are student athletes and actors, and others are students who find the traditional school setting challenging.

A large part of our student body are long term English Learners, who have been working towards mastering English for a bit longer than we would like. These students expand their knowledge of American History by reading about the experiences of a child and her family of pioneers, building a sense of pride in their new country, and an interest in history of the U.S.

My Project

During our project with The Little House in the Big Woods, students will read and discuss the early days of the US through the experiences of a young girl and her family, developing a definition of American Culture.

This project will increase the students' sense of American Culture during the time of the Westward Expansion through the stories of a pioneer girl and her family.

The Traditional American Crafts book will provide instruction for students to create quilting and other crafts. Students will enrich their reading experience by cooking traditional recipes from the cook book. The hot plate will allow us to cook in the classroom, using a cast iron skillet.

As Independent Study students, we have the flexibility to include reading, writing, speaking, cooking, sewing, geography and history into this lesson.

Motivation is a huge part of teaching. I engage teenagers to teach themselves new information and provide them with the resources to practices these new skills at home. We offer a variety of ways for students to prove what they have learned. Project-Based lessons motivate students the most. They explore topics and collaborate with their peers in a real life setting. This project will support students working on authentic projects with real world practices for more personalized learning.
