Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach seventh grade social studies in a gifted and talented program in the Bronx. My students are hard workers and high achievers, but they face the same obstacles as the other members of this high-need community.

Many of my students have never left New York. In fact, some of them rarely have the opportunity to leave the Bronx, or even their own neighborhoods. As a result, their knowledge of the world around them, and their own country in particular, is very limited. Needless to say, many of my students know very little about the geography of the United States.

The seventh grade curriculum is American History. For my students to understand the development of our country to the fullest extent, they need to have a solid foundation in U.S. geography. The best way for them to learn about the geography of the United States is through hands-on experiences with maps. Write and wipe desk maps will not only give my students the opportunity to explore the physical features and political boundaries of the United States. Using dry erase markers, these maps will also allow my students to actually trace historical events, such exploration, settlements, and battles, right onto their maps as they learn about them! The maps and markers will serve as wonderful tools to help my students gain the knowledge that they need to help them understand and remember how our country came to be.

Your help will ensure that my students learn the geography of the United States in such a way that they will never forget it. With your assistance, I will be able to bring my students out of the Bronx, so to speak, and into the rest of America!
