My Students

I teach art to an amazing group of children preK through 8th grade. I teach at a school just outside of downtown where many of the students don't have the economic advantages that our city offers. For many of my students, my art class is their first exposure to the fine arts, museums, and cultural arts.

My students are excited about learning about the world that surrounds them even though many haven't had the opportunity to venture outside of their own neighborhood.

I enjoy using art as a driving vehicle to expose my student to many different languages, cultures, and traditions. I do this while teaching them about the part that they each play in making the world better than they found it.

My Project

The materials and supplies that I have requested for my young artist already have a "home." And I thank you in advance for investing in my students and their future. I know exactly where everything will go and now we just need your help in getting everything through our door! The large bilingual art carpet will be placed in the front of the classroom and used as a gathering place during my art in literacy time with my elementary classes.

Last year our school was on the IR (Improvement Required) list for our district and with a strong push by our students, teachers, and administrators we got off of the IR list!

Now, is the time to continue to advance my students. In order to continue to grow my young artist academically, we need to incorporate literacy into all aspects of learning. As the art teacher, I already have the ABCs of Art on my wall giving each child new vocabulary as art based words to encourage them but the books that I have chosen for our literacy corner are not only about art but are all beautifully illustrated as well and become apart of my art lesson. The books cover everything from architecture to astronauts and dive into artists like Matisse and Frida Kahlo (making art fun and approachable).

Our literacy center also does double duty to encourage those students who are on task. After their artwork is done, they can go to the literacy center and explore a book or do a small project with the playdough, jewelry making, or whiteboards.
