My Students

Help our kids and our classrooms flourish! We are in great need of some basic classroom supplies, as well as a few materials for the kids to use at home.

My students are the sweetest, most determined children I have ever met.

In the face of extreme disabilities, they come to school each day so excited to learn and to spend the day with me. They are invested and love learning in a way that I never anticipated or thought was possible before I became a teacher. We have a cozy classroom of 12 students, 3 paraprofessionals and 1 teacher. Our classroom is 6th-8th grade combined. Often when people ask me what age I teach and I tell them "middle school", they groan or laugh because it is such a tough age. However, I wouldn't trade my kids in for anything. They are what makes this job so touching. We work and learn in a Brooklyn public school with an extremely poor student population. I only take my kids on free field trips and never ask them to spend money on extra supplies.

My Project

Many of my students are practicing their handwriting skills and require support from Occupational Therapists. One strategy that has proved extremely useful for them is to practice using a whiteboard and marker, rather than a pencil and paper. When we do classroom read alouds, I often ask my students to "STOP AND DRAW!" a particularly vivid or exciting scene in the story. Personal white boards will give my kids the freedom to stop and draw, while simultaneously practicing their handwriting skills. We will be so lucky to have a calendar to practice calendar math, and a pocket chart to work on letter sounds. We devote a lot of our classroom instruction to teaching life skills, citizenship and responsibility. This year I would like each of my students to write down their assignments with these fantastic assignment books. I will use the paper organizers, Velcro, and pencil sharpener for organizing, displaying, and maintaining classroom materials.

For many of my students, school is the most exciting and comforting part of their day.

It has been extraordinarily difficult to create my own curriculum and materials for each student over the past year, especially because my students are all at drastically different learning levels. Having access to these materials will allow me to create an extremely bright and supportive classroom environment. Please help us start off the 2011-2012 school year strong!!
