My Students

I teach in a small community, and over 90% of our kids are on free/reduced-price lunch. The majority of my students live in poverty. I have students from many culturally diverse backgrounds. I have had students from Somalia, the Pacific Islands of Pohnpei and Pinglap and Guam. From El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

These kids literally come from all over the world.

They are so diverse and unique. The majority are English Language Learners who speak a second language. In fact, 187 of the 400 students in our building are English Language Learners.

My Project

The books included in this project are both fiction and nonfiction. My students love information books and are always checking them out from our school library. With the information books included in this project my students will be able to not only read and enjoy them, but use them for research-based writing projects. These books will be wonderful reference material for my students.

These fiction stories will transform my students' imagination and entertain them for years to come.

These fiction stories are Show Me Award nominees, and my students will be able to read all of them this year with them right in our classroom library. At the end of the year, students who have read all of the nominated books will be invited to a voting party to vote on their favorite!
