My Students

My Pre-K students (ages 3-5 years old) love to learn and are eager to explore new centers every day. Our classroom is designed to allow children to freely explore a variety of centers and be as creative as they choose to promote their learning process. Throughout their day, the children have opportunities to work alone, with a partner, and in small groups.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many of our students have chosen to attend school remotely.

This can make it difficult for the children to experience hands-on learning. They often don't have the materials at home that we provide in school. With the help of DonorsChoose.org, we have been able to provide the much-needed learning tools to give the children a wonderful online learning environment.

My Project

In June, we will be beginning our last unit of study: transformation. Typically, we watch the metamorphosis of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly in the classroom. The children observe the daily changes and watch the process as it takes place. It is a very exciting and rewarding experience. However, this year, the children are not able to experience this wonderful miracle firsthand as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused many of my students to learn remotely from their homes.

Wouldn't it be amazing for students to have their own personal butterfly kit to observe the wonders of transformation in their own homes?

This would be the best way to enhance our end-of-the-year goals as we will be able to learn, study, and discuss the changes as they happen in real-time.

The children will be responsible to care for their own set of caterpillars and watch closely as the process begins to take place. We plan on having a butterfly release party on the last week of school as a way to celebrate all the changes they have made in PreK and signify their "flying" up to Kindergarten.
