My Students

Our school is located in the lower east side of Manhattan near Chinatown, and it offers dual language program to students from K to 8 (English and Mandarin Chinese) in district 1. We are proud of being the first English-Mandarin public bilingual school in the country. As a title 1 school, there are around 70% of the students coming from Asian heritage-families. In addition, 70 percent of the students are free or discounted lunch recipients.

Since age 5, students start to learn core subjects in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

I love how they are open minded learning new materials in two languages, embracing and respecting two cultural differences and aspects. Especially in music classroom, it is always my pleasure seeing how happily my students learn songs and chants in multiple languages and cultures.

My Project

I heard about the amazing music programs "Musical Explorers" and "Link Up" developed by Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute through other music teaching fellows 2 years ago, and I immediately applied the programs for my 2nd and 4th grade students in the following school year (2018-2019). All the participating students loved the experience learning different cultural songs, rhythms, music genres, cultural and orchestra instruments through these two wonderful music learning programs. Each 4th grade student even received a nice recorder and learned how to play beautiful songs using it.

In addition, my students had so much fun participating in the interactive concerts at Carnegie Hall!

In Musical Explorers program concert, there were over 15 world-class performers from six different cultures performing multiple songs on the stage. In Link Up program concert, students played and sang along a great selection of repertoire with an orchestra in Stern Auditorium, Carnegie Hall.

The overall wonderful experience from last year made me apply both programs again this year! I believe each single student will enjoy the learning process and be thrilled to participate in the concerts!
