Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

This will be my second year with the same students in a self-contained autistic K-1 classroom. I absolutely love working with my students. They are full of energy and love learning. I noticed last year my students were missing 2 elements in my classroom that would make the school year a success; an adequate calming corner and a quiet reading space.

My students sometimes need space alone to lay down or sit just to calm down especially when they have sensory overload.

The calming corner will allow my students to take what time they need to calm down and identify what cause the over stimulation and be able to discuss with the teachers. Currently, the classroom has a calming space with pictures and words, but there are no pillows to allow students feel comfortable in that space. The pillows would be an awesome add on!

My students love to read. I have plenty of books for the kids to read, but for the most part they end up going back to their seat or getting a carpet square to sit on the floor. I would love for my students to have a comfortable space to do their silent reading in. I believe this would increase reading in my classroom because it will allow my students to be in a comfortable space to read a book of their choice and at their pace. With this new space students love for reading will defiantly increase.
