My Students

I have a wonderful class of students who are ready and willing to learn. Everyday when I come into the classroom, my students can't wait to get unpacked and pick up their books. I watch them trying to "read intensely" as Teacher's College Units of Study wants them to. They spend minutes on each page making sure they understand every detail. It's a teacher's dream.

While my students are all eager to learn, many of them experience huge learning obstacles and would benefit from having amazing books in the classroom.

I teach in a 4th grade ICT classroom, where not only do I have students with special learning needs outlined in a specialized plan, but I also have many students reading at a 1st and 2nd grade level. Many of my students experience language processing issues so that reading is more of a tedious task, than a fun, learning filled experience.

My Project

I teacher in a 4th grade ICT classroom, which means we have both special and general education students in the classroom learning together. As a result, my students reading range is huge and we're lacking high interest, fiction and nonfiction books in the classroom.

Book choice makes such a huge difference in the lives of these young readers.

If they are able to choose an amazing book that they want to read, they could become life long readers. However, if they have to pick a book because it's the only book on the bookshelf at their level and they hate it, it could deter them from wanting to read for life.
