This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Students

My school serves an economically diverse population of students.

These students come from low income to middle income homes, with different levels of parental support. We have become a STEM academy to try and offer engaging learning to at risk kids. We also are a Title I school and work very hard to be sure that all of our students can succeed, regardless of their economic and home environments.

A big part of the day in our second grade classroom is spent sitting on the floor for direct instruction or in group investigations.

We are also a "workshop model" school and the majority of our work is with students sitting in alternate locations. I am in the process of creating an alternate seating classroom. This will allow students the freedom of choice as well as a better collaborative work environment.

Student engagement has changed over the years. The traditional classroom setting of desks, chairs and tables are becoming a hindrance to student learning. Alternative seating will allow students the opportunity of choice, movement and comfort.

Students of today are demonstrating a shorter attention span, have an increased need for movement and are demonstrating behavioral problems.

To combat classroom difficulties, teachers must make adaptations to their teaching.

By increasing student choice, student movement and student engagement, greater learning takes place. The cushions, stools, chairs and other alternative seating that this project describes will allow my students to increase their learning and excitement for the curriculum that is planned for them.
