My Students

Our classroom is a busy place each and every day. We often work in cooperative learning groups and are constantly moving throughout the room. Special seating is a must to encourage students to be productive.

The students in my classroom are a diverse group of learners with a variety of needs.

We are a rural, Title 1 campus in Texas where parental involvement is great, and students are also very involved in sports and community activities. The majority of our curriculum in Grade 2 focuses on foundational skills introduced in Kindergarten and Grade 1. Students are transitioning into reading beginning chapter books, adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers, working in groups to complete assignments and team projects, and learning additional written conventions. Most are involved in youth sports' teams, raising animals, church and organizational groups, or perfecting hobbies. My students are a bright and bubbly group with a passion for learning and helping others.

My Project

I am asking for twelve stability disks for alternative seating options. With the new stability discs, students will have additional seating throughout the room. Since they are light-weight, students will be able to use them in their chairs or move to sit on the floor on one of our many rugs. Research has proven that stability discs in classrooms can increase focus and levels of productivity, as students' brains are stimulated and cores engaged while balancing on their discs. Additionally, the discs, rather than stability balls, seem safer as the risk of falls is minimal. Some of our students with special needs will benefit greatly from having a special seat to get their wiggles out!

Sitting on a stability disc requires good balance and attention to the body's position.

This heightened attention sharpens mental focus and will lead to increased productivity in our classroom. Students who are natural wigglers will have a quiet solution to wiggle while they work. This project will positively impact the culture of our classroom!
