This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Are you a pen clicker, hair twirler, knee bouncer, drummer? These are all signs of an active person. Some people need to do this in order to have more focus on a task at hand. Students learn best by being an active learner and feeling most comfortable in the space they are in.
I am lucky to be a 2nd grade teacher with energetic and enthusiastic learners.
My students face many challenges throughout their young life. Yet when they come to class they are there, engaged and eager to learn. By offering alternative seating options, all students will get to choose where they learn best each day. By providing students with a choice, it empowers each student to take charge of his or her learning, and be active in his or her education. In doing this, students will have a positive experience in education to foster that love of life-long learning, and education.
My Project
I am requesting 2 Kore Kids chairs, 2 wobble chairs, 5 stools and a pack of chair bands. Research suggests that some children need movement to retain focus, spinning and bouncing in their chairs correlated with better performance. We have tables in the classroom to allow for maximum student collaboration, but the hard chairs do not suit the needs of my fidgety students. My school is working very hard to establish a culture of independence and rigorous collaborative learning. By having chairs that the students feel more comfortable in, will give the student's the ability to remain on task and focused. Students that are happy, comfortable and engaged are better learners.
This project will make a difference for my students, and my classroom long-term, because it will be something that all my students (present and future) will be able to benefit from.
By allowing my students to choose seating that is specific to their daily needs, I am giving them the ability to choose what is best for them. Children are naturally different and diverse, and just like one-sized education doesn't fit all, neither do their chairs.
