This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
I like my classroom to be a hands-on, fun learning environment. When you walk into my classroom, you immediately see learning occurring. Children are engaged in small group projects, building interesting structures with blocks, and determining what sinks and what floats at the water table. I like to ask questions, pointing out children's successes, and guiding learning. I want my room to have a sense of purpose, organization, and excitement.
My Project
When these new materials arrive at my classroom, it will enable me to take their learning to new heights. When my students know their alphabets, it will help them later in life as they advance into the upper grades.
Letter recognition is important because it enables beginning readers to figure out how printed text is associated with the spoken language.
This is why alphabetic recognition is one of the very first skills children learn while they are beginning readers. It comes before phonemic awareness and decoding. Learning these new skills in a hands-on manner will they help to form the basis of their language and communication for a lifetime. Learning the alphabet as the foundation of our spoken language gives us the advantage of knowing how letters and words are pronounced, how to think in a language, and how to spell in that language.
