My Students

Our school is open to children from two school districts. We serve approximately 555 students in grades PK-5. We have a racially diverse student body and dual language classes in both Spanish and French. Minority enrollment is 69% of the student body (majority Hispanic and Black), which is more than the state average of 55%. The reading and writing scores of low-income students at this school are above the state average for low-income kids, but they're still below the state average for all kids. Teachers are hard-working and dedicated to ensuring that our children are challenged academically and respected as individuals. Students feel a sense of community and are encouraged to work collaboratively and to also do their personal best.

My Project

Fifth-grade students synthesize everything they've learned during the course of the music program. They begin with the chorus. They are then introduced to the ukulele. With the ukulele, students learn hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills, even whole-body/kinesthetic movement. Students combine melodic, harmonic, and chordal playing, and singing – all at the same time. A wise man once said, “A student well versed in even one technique will naturally see corresponding points in other techniques.”

Music and Literacy combine to create contextual learning opportunities across subject areas.

In the movie “The Mighty Uke” the filmmaker travels the world discovering why so many people of different nations, cultures, ages and musical tastes turn to the ukulele to express themselves, connect with the past, and with each other. As soon as one student learns to play and sing Hakuna Matata they are all hooked. By the end of the year, students intertwine piano, drums, guitars, and ukulele in order to put together a show for graduation.
