My Students

Do you remember sitting down with your mom and dad each night, listening to their soothing voice read you a wonderful book? Was this the starting point of your love of reading? Did they capture your attention by changing the voices of the different characters?

Not all of my students have that opportunity to hear their parents express the different reading techniques that you or I may have grown up with.

Many of my twenty-one boys and girls are at school from very early in the morning until late at night. By the time their parents are finished working long hours, they are too tired to sit and read for a prolonged time with their children. Many of my students are still in need of exposure to reading smoothly (fluently). Our class is a Title 1 district, which is part of the New York City Department of Education. In other words, they come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and the majority of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

We were fortunate to receive a listening center in our classroom. Although it has piqued my students’ interest, we have minimal resources and are in desperate need of more! I am asking for your assistance to provide my students with materials that will help enrich their reading experiences! Many of my students are still reading far below grade level. Listening to audio books will provide them with the extra push that they need to help them catch up and expand their reading skills. Do you remember how you used to mimic the way your parents read? These listening center materials will help my students to read smoothly - not with choppy breaks between words. It will also help enable the students to practice and apply this skill on a daily basis. Reading with the audio books will also allow for better comprehension of the information that is being presented to the student.
