This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students want to become Allstate Foundation Service Stars and help give back to our community! February’s Mission of the Month is “Speak Out: Raise Awareness about a Problem in Your Community” One problem that my students have noticed in our community is that not all students have easy access to reading books outside the classroom. Many schools have a library available for students to borrow reading books, but because our school is a small charter school we don't have space for a school library on campus.

My students want to create a lending library that will be accessible for our class and then available for other students on campus.

I want to help my students address this issue and share about their cause with the goal of making things better.

My students are taking a step by step approach to address and solve this problem impacting our school.

First, my students are addressing the current problem that not all students have access to reading books at home.

Second, my students have decided to address this problem directly by making a lending library in our classroom.

In order to help my students to address this problem, we need some new books to setup our lending library. We also need library cards and pens for tracking the books when they are borrow and return.

“If there is one primary responsibility of public elementary schools, it is to teach children to read so they may have a future filled with opportunity,” said Marshall Tuck, EdVoice CEO.

My students have access to so many wonderful books in our classroom, but some may not have the same access at home. My hope is that once my students have access to more chapter books, they will share these books with their peers at school.
