Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach all subjects in a public school with a knowledge-hungry group of third graders in New York City. Situated in the strained Bronx, these kids daily attempt to escape the adversities that are the realities of their lives. Most of these students come to school with no supplies or materials to help them absorb the vast amount of knowledge that the world has to offer. Many of the students also come to school with minimal proper hygiene and many illnesses and ailments that the school cannot help cure. However, if the school can help minimize the effects of these ailments and allow them to focus on learning in school, wouldn’t you want to help? Our school building is over 50 years old where some windows cannot open or close properly and dust is present everywhere including the vents and the radiators. Since I currently use chalk in the classroom, the chalk dust doesn’t help my students with allergies and asthma. Since I use the blackboard as a learning tool and also where many students come up and demonstrate their strategies, I would like to convert the blackboard into a dry erase board so that our environment as well as our hands can be cleaner and have less irritant in the air. In addition, using a dry erase board is also more fun for the students since I can use different colored markers whereas the colored chalk was difficult to see as well as difficult to remove. Wouldn’t you want to help provide our third graders a cleaner and a safer environment to learn?
