Allagash Wilderness Waterway-More Than a Canoe Trip

My students need donations to allow two students to spend five days on the Allagash River learning about the environment and developing leadership skills.

My Students

There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a student accomplish something they thought they could never do! Canoeing for 5 days on a wilderness river, sleeping in the great outdoors and eliminating nature deficit disorder is a wonderful feeling. Learning leadership skills is a major bonus.

My students are a good group of individuals who are very similar to students in other rural environments.

Many have parents who provide them with opportunities to explore the environment through outdoor recreational activities whereas others are not as fortunate. Our school, like many other schools, has experienced decreasing enrollment and a shrinking budget due to a reduced tax base as a result of business closing and industry shrinking in this geographic area. Despite these conditions, the students continue to learn and enjoy being young. We do not have many of the issues that occur in urban areas but we do have many of the same problems that youth experience. Bottom line, what they lack in material goods they make up with enthusiasm.

My Project

Two students will be selected based on the submission of an essay by those interested in participating in the week long trip. The trip will include 8 other students from the area plus one intern provided by the Northern Forest Canoe Trail organization. The students will study ecology and wildlife, in addition to the leadership skills anticipated on a canoe trip.

Having guided this group for the past two years and seeing the students grow as a result of this adventure is wonderful to observe.

The students who attended last year are still talking about their experiences! The two students selected will hopefully grow in many ways as a result of this opportunity.
