My Students

My students are rich in diversity: I work with students who were born in other countries and speak other languages, students who are impacted by poverty and a lack of resources, students with a variety of special needs, students who range in age from 4-11. What they all have in common is that they love to move!

For our health and safety, due to COVID-19, we will be having PE classes outdoors as much as possible this year.

While there are many benefits to learning and being in the great outdoors, there are also challenges. Our families and our community really value our students’ education but our financial resources are limited.

My Project

We have been having PE outdoors whenever possible, as it is the safest option at this time. My students have been doing a great job of embracing this “new normal” as we have been connecting the benefits of physical activity—and particularly physical activity outdoors—to overall wellness. However, much of the equipment that we have is best suited for warm weather or indoor use.

My students will be excited and motivated to get out in the colder weather with access to toys and equipment specifically designed for active play in the wind and snow.

They will be able to have shared experiences while maintaining safe social distancing protocols. Being able to get out in the fresh air will be particularly important this year as we all try to stay healthy and avoid sharing germs. As our society is spending more and more time indoors and in front of screens, having an opportunity to develop an appreciation of being outdoors in nature has great mental health benefits.
