My Students

When you think of a kindergarten classroom what is the first thing you visualize? For most of us, we think of a rug for the students to sit on. My students deserve a clean inviting rug to sit on every day. The kindergartners learn so much by being engaged on the rug in my classroom.

This year I have 22 energetic and motivated students.

About 75 percent of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are highly motivated to learn, no matter what challenges they may face at home or in the community. All the parents in my class want the best education for their child and they all try their best to support their child's learning. I am the lucky one to be their teacher.

My Project

I would love a new rug for my students to sit on. Thankfully, seven years ago I was a able to get a new rug from Donorschoose.org. Due to a limited school budget I am in the same situation again. There is no money to buy my class a rug. Currently, I vacuum the rug daily and the school shampoos the rug once a year. It has come to a point where all this cleaning doesn't make a difference.

My students sit, learn and interact with each other on this rug daily and I think they deserve a new rug.

This rug has helped me teach at least 175 kindergartners how to read, write, count and get along. We spend at least 25 percent of the day sitting, standing or exploring on this rug. This rug is not just a rug. It is filled with numbers, letters and words. There are numerous activities we can do in the classroom with this rug. When we learn a new letter sound, the students love to find the letter on the rug and they are always excited when they learn to read all the words on the rug.
