My Students

Our school is a small K-8 school nestled along the coast of Maine. We are a close-knit community with a high free and reduced lunch population. Year to year, our budgets remain the same, but the needs and costs of materials are rising. Our students and teachers deserve to have the materials that they all need to ensure that the learning that is happening is beneficial for both the students as well as the teachers.

My students are hands- on and thrive from being interactive learners.

The more hands on materials that we have the better! I am hoping to add more materials to my classroom as each new year begins. The looks on the students faces as new materials are introduced are priceless.

I always look forward to being able to add that next beneficial tool to the classroom that might help a student learn in a way that wasn't possible before. Their smiles and gains make it all worth it.

My Project

First grade is creating new writing centers to excite our authors and inspire them to make GREAT books! We want students to get excited about being writers. Our first grade team read the book, "About the Authors," by Katie Wood Ray and we were inspired to change what writing looks like for our students. We want our authors to "own" the books they are creating. Students should be inspired to make beautiful and thoughtful books and share their writing with an audience of peers, teachers and parents. Writing can be a challenging time for many students. Students will feel successful by having a vast supply of writing materials at their disposal to make books as unique as the authors that write them.

Creating books empowers children to share their stories and what is important to them as writers!

Imagine a group of first graders folding paper, adding pages, binding books, drawing colorful illustrations, writing their best stories, showcasing their expertise and sharing their works of art with the people that matter the most. Students will have access to a variety of materials to make this dream a reality. We will use wireless doorbells to signal to students that it is time to clean up or transition during writing stations. They will fold legal size paper to make their own books. They will staple books together and use Crayola Twistables to illustrate each page with creative drawings. We look forward to seeing the creative way our students will use their new materials.
