My Students

We are a middle school in NYC DOE's District 75 program (self-contained schools for students with disabilities), located in Corona Queens. We are housed within a larger, general education middle school and often collaborate with the general education community. We are a close knit, largely Spanish-speaking community, where everyone works to help one another. Our motto, "Positivity is Power", is one we truly live by. Our students are energetic, creative and enthusiastic but face a lot of challenges adapting in academic and social settings.

In our school community all of our students get a chance to shine through our Theater and Arts program.

Whether it be through performance, theater-making, or behind the scenes work, all of our students are involved and included in every production. They love expressing themselves through singing, dancing, and art. Even when they need lots of additional support, our students never give up and always try their best to put on a spectacular performance for the school and community.

My Project

Educators know that arts integration is a powerful tool for academic and socio-emotional growth, especially for students with special needs, like ours. Creating, rehearsing and preparing for performance supports students' skills in literacy (fluency, reading comprehension), sequencing, visual-spatial awareness, organizational, and self-actualization (personal preferences, sense of purpose). In addition, engaging in the arts provides continuous opportunities for social and emotional development through peer-to-peer and student-teacher interactions. Also, we have so much fun!!

Even though theater and the arts greatly contribute to academic excellence and enhancement of social skills, arts educators don't always have the budget to match our students' vision.

This year's end-of-year show is "Riverview's Got Talent" - a scripted talent show, a la "America's Got Talent". For our performances, our students work together with staff to design and create unique costumes, props and sets, but sometimes we need a little help with basic resources to get started. One of our acts is a dance to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" and the students want to replicate a part of the music video where Taylor and her dancers wear awesome metallic outfits. We are requesting funding for gold metallic pants, hoodies and hats, which will be the base of this costume. Please help our kids make their vision a reality!
