My Students

Our small K-6 public school is over 40 years old, close to two military bases and many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. All of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. As a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of other schools in our area.

Although my students represent the very best in America, they don't have the funds for school supplies, computers or field trip fees, but they still want to learn.

My student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 20% of our students are in bilingual/ELL programs, Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska.

My students want to be successful but they desperately need help. Every day they fall further behind. They are falling into an unfair technology lack-gap because our school lacks the budget to support them.

My Project

The students who use my library are wonderful, inquisitive children. At our school, we have students, particularly males, who are in danger of failing the key academic areas of reading, science and math. We also have a serious problem because by 4th grade, my students will need to take their standard assessment composition test on-line. As a result, they need to learn how to keyboard.

My students love technology but have very limited access.

In order to improve reading, writing and research skills, they need two Chromebooks with management licenses so they learn keyboarding skills while developing their reading and writing skills. If we do not do something now to capture the imaginations of these students they will probably become dropouts. Now is the time to avert this tragedy.

I desperately need these 2 Chromebooks, listening center and earbuds because I plan to set up a tech lab in the library where my students can work.

My goal is to have all my students learn 21st century skills so they can participate fully in their education. Most students live in a world filled with technology. I need to harness the technology of that world and bring it into my classroom. I need greater accessibility for my students. My school is a poor school and could never afford this type of access. Help me to help my students.
