This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are 12 students in my current classroom, who are in the 5th grade. Ranging from very different personalities, they share one thing in common. They are all very excited learners. They love learning through hands on activities, experiences and technology. The school they are located at is a diverse neighborhood in New York City surrounded by historical museums and national parks.

Every student can learn, (just not the same way).

These students have a passion for learning new skills and concepts. They do not waste time in the classroom and are easily fascinated by their tools and environment as they love exploring.

My Project

Hello! My name is Ms. V and I am a 5th grade Special Ed Teacher in District 75. This district, and my classroom, are focused on educating students, specifically those who are on the autism spectrum, have significant cognitive delays, are severely emotionally challenged and/or have multi disabilites. My goal is to have my students reach independency in their work and routine while I continue to keep my instruction rigorous and meaningful.

A barrier to my goal has been the deficit of tools to support my station work and mini lessons, which the students highly need.

We are in need of a a document camera, headphones, and color-coded storage.

The document camera will help project shared content to our visual learners. It is important that all students learn the same skills and are learning it together as a class before they are divided into their groups for individualized instruction. They will also instantly be able to share their work to their peers. Many of our students are auditory learners andbenefit from audiobooks. Headphones will be used for independent reading, which will accommodate students to stay on task and focused as well as block out outside noise. Lastly, students will benefit from color-coded storage to help them independently organize their work and correctly follow the routine using colors. These tools will greatly help our class be successful in learning and self-management.
