Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.

This has not hampered our students' eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teach, but our school needs as much help as it can get.

Many of these students struggle to make it to class on time because they are trying to get their younger siblings ready for school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.

My Project

The world needs a place where when we a see a kid looking down in class it is at a book not their phone. I'm trying to build a library for my students and I need your help. My library has ups and downs because I'm a sucker and I'll often give a book from my library to a student because they don't have any books at home. Last year I gave a book to a student to read over the summer. I told her that when she was done with it, meaning she either read it or decided she wasn't going to read it anymore, that she had to give it to someone else. I saw her at the beginning of this year and she told me she loved the book so much that she gave it to her Mom. I think part of the reason she loved it was because she saw representation of herself and the community in the book. What I've done is selected books that my students will see parts of themselves in the main characters. So, let's get some books in some kids hands.

There is value in a home that has books on the shelf.

I've always loved the quote from Marcus Tullius Cicero, “A room without books is like a body without a soul.”

If you're donating know that some of these books won't stay in my library, you might just be helping start a whole new library for one of my student's. I've also put in three rugs so that students can stretch out in their new library.

Our school is trying to drastically increase the amount of books that students read. With your help we can do it.
