About My Students

The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy events, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.

By reading together, my students not only develop literacy, but empathy and community. The goal of having a book to discuss supports their innate love of reading. When they talk about the books, they sometimes disagree or challenge each other to not only engage more deeply with the perspective of the characters, but the different perspectives each reader brings. This opens students to building empathy for the experience of others. They must learn to both assert dissenting views and respect those of their friends in book club. This year, I was excited to hear they were going to look for books from a variety of genres in order to expand their reading and views. This book is an excellent example of that.

In Their Own Words

Our literature club plans to receive funding so we can begin reading a new book that’ll help us explore different genres. All the Winds in the World by Samantha Mabry is suspense book, which will make us open our minds to different possibilities and keep us on the edge of our seats as we turn each page. Our club gets together weekly to discuss the book and make comparisons based on other books we have read. Not only will we talk about literary themes, we will get into a discussion of human nature and why the protagonist make the choices they do.

My co-president and I will lead the discussions and have meetings every Wednesday, so club members can talk about things relevant to the book and how it relates to things we have already encountered, whether it be another book or another piece of media such as a TV show. This is a group activity, so everyone will be encouraged to speak and share their mind; there is no wrong opinion. We want everyone to speak and share something. All voices will be heard, my co-president and I just organize the meetings and try and foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable.

This project is important because it helps keep Literature Club alive. Literature Club is full of students from many different backgrounds and social groups. This club is a place where we can bond over our shared love of stories. It helps unify so many different people while we explore the different possibilities in the world. Not only will we explore different lives and tales, we will gain valuable skills, such as public speaking and debate. We need literature to analyze so we can accomplish this goal. The Literature Club has been a home to many different students over the years and I know it will still be one in the future. We just need some help to make sure each member has the resources needed to participate.
