Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students continue to prove that children from low-income neighborhoods can thrive.

Our school sits in the middle of the poorest congressional district in the United States.

We have the third-highest percentage of single mothers in America and host some of the nation's highest childhood asthma rates. Ten years ago, our school was one of the city's lowest-performing schools. It was a chaotic place, simply focused on providing a safe environment for students to visit during the day.

Today, ours is a model school whose teachers embrace responsive classroom teaching strategies. Students reading and comprehension scores have increased from their record lows by five hundred percent. Parent satisfaction and support for school efforts are high, teachers provide innovative and engaging instruction, and everyone involved with the school rates its leadership top notch.

In large part, our collaborative and effort focused school culture has helped students embrace a growth mindset; the idea that struggle and even failure breeds success. These lessons are embedded in everything we do.

I am amazed by and incredibly proud of my students. Despite the many obstacles they have to overcome, they come to school everyday eager and ready to learn.

My Project

My physical education classes include engaging academic lessons where students practice the skills they need to participate in all sorts of activities.

As my capacity to provide advanced PE instruction has grown, I've found a need to use many of the same tech tools traditional classroom teachers use on a daily basis.

This request includes a mounted TV screen and Apple TV that will allow me to stream content from anywhere in our gym. Media I hope to share includes team shake, interval timers, Sworkit, skills-based tutorials (i.e., how to kick a soccer ball), stop motion videos, activity timers, scoreboards, and various follow-along videos.

Adding these resources to my curriculum will help students gain alternative and deeper understandings of the concepts taught in physical education while engaging their interest in a whole new way!
