Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching science to elementary students is a joy. I teach in the Bronx in a Title 1 school in the. 98% of my students live below the poverty level and they receive free breakfast and lunch. The language of science is important for all students to understand and have a working knowledge of in order to succeed. Many of the students are immigrants and come from varied backgrounds and countries such as the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Senegal, Gambia, and Ghana. Many of our students are ENL (English as a New Language) learners.

The common language of science gives all students a level playing field.

Resources are very limited. It is very hard to get students to bring in $5 for a class trip, let alone anything else they need for extra supplies for science. They really benefit from hands-on class work, hands-on experiments, journals, and interactive games are the best way for my students to understand the concepts, and reach the New York State Standards.

My Project

How does the use of electricity and magnetism affect our world? Through hands on experiments, students have the opportunity to see and understand the importance of the relationship between magnets and electricity. Everyone loves to play with magnets! Giving these low-income students access to hands on experiments and investigations, students will get to use and understand just important magnets are, and how they are used in everyday items around the house, and in our electronics. Magnetism is a force that may attract or repel certain materials. Understanding magnetic north, law of attraction, and the gravitational pull of the Earth, are important concepts for students to understand.
