This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I’d like to get all my students' hands in clay! However, when I am working with partial sets of supplies and materials (due to the increase in class size) it can be difficult. Some students are made to wait for supplies and equipment or given an alternative assignment while the first half of class works. This can lead to frustration and withdrawal instead of the engaging lessons and units I have created for my students. My goal is to enrich the learning for all my students.

Working in a technical high school I’ve found my students like to use their hands!

They came here to learn, make, and create. With a small amount of funding, I can create full sets of materials for my students, and proper materials– rather than having to “make-do” which can be a point of frustration for many. It is my goal to allow the opportunity for all my students to have their hands in clay at the same time. To fully engage in a lesson alongside their peers they will accelerate their learning through discourse and help each other create. I believe leveling the playing field always helps keep students engaged and reduces stress and anxiety for all.

As an Arts teacher without full class sets of supplies and materials, I am made to work 2-3 times as hard. I am forced to juggle multiple lessons at a time. This is because I don’t have enough for everyone– and I can’t have students not engaging in Art-making. Art teachers are by nature hard-working and creative– but our students deserve more of our time and attention.
