This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school district just implemented all day kindergarten for three full classrooms. Imagine trying to keep 75, 5 year olds excited about learning throughout the day. These centers will keep them going and learning at their own level.

In my class, I have a majority that have not attended preschool.

This greatly impacts their readiness skills and requires me to review basic skills that most kindergartners should start school with. All three classes have students from extreme poverty levels, some whose parents are even illiterate.

My Project

Many of our students have limited toys because of their family situation, much less any of educational value. What may seem like a box with cards and a few maniplulatives to us open us is a whole new world of learning to them. These vividly colored centers will allow students to learn much more than basic math skills. They will take responsibility for their own learning by becoming their partners, teacher, and coach, while gaining new skills themselves. The children will be able to learn social skill that will help them in the future as well.

At our school, we are always hearing and saying, "The one doing the work is doing all the learning." If the teacher is doing all the talking, the students are not doing all the learning.

So, at any given time you will find small groups/teams actively engaged in their own learning. Kindergarten math is more than just learning their numbers. These activities will allow students to gain reasoning skills, team building, and other social skills that go beyond what one can imagine.
