Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. I want my students to feel independent. This year all of my students will be able to tell time and take a giant step toward independence.

My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls that are Intellectually Disabled.

Their smiles can brighten up a room. We are located in a New York City high-poverty specialized school. Each and every one of my students can learn however, resources are few. Hands-on manipulatives could be the driving force behind independence and success.

My Project

Each day, the students enter the classroom and look at the Daily Schedule, but they cannot truly understand when events will take place. I want my students to be able to tell precise time up to the minute by the time they leave my class at the end of this year. They will put together 'time' puzzles independently. They will play 'time' games with their friends. We will learn as whole and small groups using clocks and dry erase markers. Students will feel successful. This is a life skill which can prevent them from being taken advantage of in the real world.

I believe students learn by doing.

Utilizing hands-on math manipulatives will make all the difference in their success for learning this skill. They will be able to set an alarm clock. They will be able to read a bus or train schedule. They will be on time for school, work, and appointments without having to rely on another person. They will wear a watch and be able to tell time and realize the meaning. They can plan a party.
