My Students

My classroom is full of curious readers, authors, scientists, and mathematicians. My students attend a Title I school in Oakland, California with a school-wide free breakfast and lunch program. Many of my students come from families and communities that have experienced some form of trauma and often have difficulty coming to school. Our school has an increasing amount of newcomer families, which continue to make our school an amazing and diverse community where are all welcome.

My students are survivors and thinkers, who push through these tribulations to question, dream, and inspire.

Together, we show up and work hard each and every day to grow as life-long learners and critical thinkers.

My Project

These books and art supplies will be used to celebrate my diverse classroom, and give the chance for students to engage with their own cultures, communities, and heritage. As of right now, my classroom library is limited to books that aren't representative of the students who are reading them. I hope to fill the shelves with these diverse texts, and give each child the opportunity to identify with the characters on the pages. These books will act as mirrors of students' own cultures, and windows into those of others, giving a meaningful opportunity for reflection and growth.

With these books and supplies, I will be better suited to give my diverse classroom the chance to dig a little deeper into who they are, and celebrate the process along the way.

Using the art supplies in this project, I am hoping to launch a classroom-wide activity where students work to mix a paint color that matches their own skin. These colors will be stored in the glass jars and saved for us to use throughout the year, giving plentiful opportunities to appreciate our diversity. Launching this project will create a space for thoughtful conversations around identity and culture, and I can not wait to get started.
