My Students

This project is for my English 10 general class. I want to expand their horizons and understanding of the world with the books that I present to them. My class has quite a few students that identify themselves as non-readers, but I desire to change that by putting engaging and relevant texts in their hands. I teach at a mid-sized high school in Virginia. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, from trailers in the mountains of our county, from newly built subdivisions, and from the (somewhat) nearby cities of Baltimore and Washington DC. From many paths, they have found themselves in my classroom in the mountain state.

My desire in English 10 is to provide better windows and mirrors through the books that we read: to provide texts that help students understand themselves and others better.

My Project

I have always loved the book To Kill a Mockingbird, but I want to disrupt the text this year. The story pulls at my heartstrings, but I do not think it is the best text for all of my students.

I would like to disrupt my teaching of To Kill a Mockingbird with All American Boys for my general English 10 class, and supplement TKaM with the text in my honors 10 class.

All American Boys is a recent novel written by two authors, Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds. The chapters alternate between the perspectives of a young white boy who observes a racial incident, and a young black boy who endures it. 16 year old African American Rashad is accused of a crime he didn't commit, and Quinn Collins is the bystander who could prove Rashad innocent if he can look past his own prejudice.

Not only is this novel more accessible to my struggling readers, but it is a text that speaks to the polarized social climate of our times.
