Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

History and Geography are integral parts of any fifth grade curriculum. It is imperative that we, as a society, reflect upon our past in order to shape our future. The pyramids of ancient Giza, the flowing gardens of Babylon, the Great Wall of China -just a few of mankinds' greatest achievements. As a fifth grade teacher I feel it is important that I convey the significance of certain ancient civilizations to my students. I teach in an empowerment school in New York City as a bilingual educator. My current curriculum has proven to demand the implementation of books regarding Aztec Civilization. As part of our History curriculum we have an Aztec Unit that expands into our Literacy, Writing, Science and Social Studies curriculum. Our children are to first learn about geography, and slowly transition into the Aztecs. This year marks the first time we have implemented an Aztec Unit in our studies. For this reason, I'm in dire need of Aztec literature and any other geographical magazines. My classroom currently does not have many books about this ancient civilization either in English or Spanish. Hence, we are unable to conduct any in-class research projects because of our lack of books. All of my students are excited to learn about a civilization that has shaped Mexico as we know it today. Our goal is to learn about Aztec history, government, cultural, traditions, etc. In turn, students will learn to identify relevant physical and cultural characteristics of the Aztecs in Social Studies. From there we will transition into Science and learn about the engineering used for creating the main city and for maintaining the survival of this civilization. However, for this, many literature materials are needed. I plan to use these books (supplemented by the Internet) as a resource for information. They will help our students envision and explore this ancient civilization. In the interim, students will be creating dioramas, Aztec maps and essays. My students will emerge more knowledgeable of Aztec Civilization. Obtaining more books will help me give my bilingual students a year of excitement. My children will not only benefit from learning about the Aztecs but at the same time they will become better readers, writers and geographers.
