Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the past year I have been given the opportunity to attend various professional development seminars and conferences and have been astonished at how the top schools are now preparing their students for their college career.

Sadly, the students in our school will not have that advantage because they don't have access to the technology that most other students have.

As a high school that caters to students who have made mistakes in their past, Apex strives to afford them that one chance to make a change in their lives. They need someone to believe in them and give them a much needed opportunity. Located in a low socioeconomic community, where teens are forced to make difficult choices, many of our student s have to make difficult choices, such as working to help their families or staying in school and getting a college education. Our students would be the first person in their family to attend college and need all the support we can provide.

My Project

One of the biggest problems my students face is understanding the connections between algebra concepts and the real world. I truly believe if they made that connection, they could be successful and have the same advantage that other students in more affluent communities have. Inspired by the teachers who have demonstrated their success using the iPad, I have designed activities and authentic assessments that would engage students and provide them with a more connected and complete understanding of the important algebraic concepts that are necessary for success in college. The iPad is one of the most innovative ways to do so. This hand held device can be used to make an algebraic connection to the real world, such as collecting, graphing and analyzing real data. Data that applies to them. Students can create their own learning experiences employing the applications available and eventually creating their own.

Student engagement is one of the most important aspects of teaching and learning, yet it is the most difficult to achieve.

Faced with technological distractions, teachers must invent new ways to keep students focused and interested in learning. Please help me help them! All it takes is a few generous people to make a big difference in their lives and provide them with a more hopeful future that all young adults deserve.
