Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students, in this urban bilingual K2 classroom, bring with them a plethora of interests, abilities, skills, and experiences. All of my students are learning how to navigate their own unique journey of bilingualism. These super students learn how to communicate, how to write, and acquire foundational reading skills in both Spanish and English! My K2 students come excited to explore, construct, and learn. But most of all, they all love to share their experiences and anecdotes with each other. This is where the greatness starts. It's incredible to see their academic growth while mastering social-emotional skills that help them play, cooperate, communicate, self-regulate, and self-reflect.

My Project

There is currently no community carpet in the classroom and due to COVID last year, we weren't able to utilize such resource. The kindergarten team definitely saw some of the negative affects of not having a set physical space, like the carpet, where children can come together to express their ideas, narratives, and feelings.

Students will be able to come together on this carpet to dialogue; share experiences and anecdotes; cooperative play; learn social skills like listening and giving feedback; and start the day with some mindfulness.

This carpet will also make a great addition to our K2 classroom and will facilitate many activities with less disruption. The bilingual kindergarteners will definitely benefit from such large space to explore and learn.
