My Students

My students are amazing and a joy to work with. My school is a kindergarten though eighth grade charter school in Anchorage, Alaska. The students here are primarily Alaskan Native with ancestry in many Alaskan Native tribes including Tlingit, Haida, Unangan, Athabaskan, and many others.

My school's focus on cultural learning and native ways of knowing has inspired me to teach my students about Alaskan Native arts and culture.

I encourage my students to treat my classroom as their studio and a place where they are safe and free to express themselves. In this way, my students can not only learn about their rich and diverse culture, but they can also help to contribute to it.

My Project

My art students love sculpture. It is a struggle to fit sculpture materials into a very limited art budget, especially with the high cost of shipping heavy items to Alaska. Despite these difficulties, I find ways to both incorporate sculpture into the art curriculum and use it to further the cultural learning that is the cornerstone of our school curriculum.

My students want to create class totem poles to display during morning messages.

These totem poles will represent them and the Alaskan Native values they learn about and practice in their regular classrooms. The students and staff at my school have been collecting recycled boxes and household packaging containers to act as armatures for these large sculptures, and we now need sculptural materials such as wire mesh, wire, and plaster gauze to create the outer shell and details.

Students from grades kindergarten though eight grade will learn about and study real totem poles made by a variety of Alaskan Native tribes, and they will make sketches and drawings of the animals they want to depict in their class totem pole. Each student will contribute to the final product and will gain valuable experience in both the technical and cultural aspects of Alaskan Native art.
