Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small school of just about three hundred students in grades 9-12. We are located in the South Bronx, although our students do come from neighboring communities within the Bronx.

More than 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

We also have several dozen students that are homeless or doubled up. Regardless, our kids work hard to achieve their dreams. Get into college, start careers and do what makes them happy. We have a very supportive community of educators and professionals that support them in their pursuits as well.

My Project

Our school is located in the South Bronx, also nicknamed Asthma Alley. There are many factories, businesses and highways in our area that have contributed to to increased air pollution. With our heighened awareness of air quality and what dangers are unseen to the naked eye, we want or students to test the air in our school classrooms for different levels of particulate matter. Depending on the outcome, we will ask students to develop a plan of action on how to address levels of particulate matter in various school rooms.

Our students will create air particulate matters sensors in the classroom using arduinos.

Those who are remote learning will have an opportunity to design these on tinkercad. We will have students place them throughout our school building - near windows that look out onto the highway, in windowless classrooms, and perhaps even at a few of their homes. We will collect relevant data and analyze our real life data as a class. Together we will collaborate to address the pollution inequities that plague our neighborhood.
