Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My general music students attend a middle school in the Chicago area. They excel at expressing themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.

My students create, compose, and improvise with classroom instruments and technology.In my general music classes, I

teach over 330 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8 and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income.

Students participate in many musical activities including electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles. They explore world percussion, and students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa. Students love to learn!

My Project

My middle school students are fortunate in that my school has a dedicated music room with many music instruments! However, the classroom has very small windows that do not open to the outside and do not allow in any fresh, circulating air. At times, there is limited ventilation in the room due to issues with the facility. This leaves the room with a lack of fresh air. This is of special concern to the many students and adults who pass through the room who have respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies.

I am requesting a large room air purifier to remove dust and mold particles to improve the health of all students and staff and improve the learning experience for students.
