My Students

In class every day, we use a software that is adaptive, collecting and adjusting instruction to meet each students' needs. My students engage in multiple readings of leveled text, make audio recordings, and learn academic and content-area vocabulary. This is great, but we need functioning headsets!

My awesome middle school students are from a Title I school in Washington, DC who have special needs.

They are struggling readers who need intensive, individualized instruction to address their unique reading needs. Phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension are just some of the skills developed and practiced in our reading intervention class. My school is one of the rising middle schools in Washington, DC. Recently boasting academic gains in both reading and math on the DC CAS, significant increases in partnerships, family engagement, extracurricular options, and a rigorous but supportive learning environment, my school is hoping to meet the needs of students at all ability and interest levels. Over the next two years, my school will engage in a challenging academic plan to integrate the International Baccalaureate curriculum, making it a school of choice for DC families. You will help us provide our special needs students with the supports and resources with your donations!

My Project

With these 20 new headsets, my students will be able to work quietly without distractions, focusing on the skills that we are targeting in our reading intervention class. They will begin each software segment by watching an engaging Anchor Video to build background knowledge and mental models with their headsets on. Students will engage in multiple readings of leveled text, make audio recordings using the microphones from their headsets, and learn academic and content-area vocabulary. Students can record their reading of the passage repeatedly from their headsets to monitor their own fluency and self-check. Students answer multiple choice vocabulary and comprehension questions and receive immediate corrective feedback. In addition to this, audiobooks offer struggling readers the opportunity to develop good reading strategies and habits while enjoying authentic grade-level literature. My students will enjoy listening to these with their headsets!

We are hopeful that my students can achieve their highest potential with your help!

Your donations to this project will provide the right resources and supports for my students in our reading intervention class. When you walk into our classroom, you will immediately see that something is different. You may notice the technology first, but it won't be long before you will realize that this is a classroom designed for engagement with technology, with text, with a savvy teacher, and with each other!
