We live in a rural copper farming/copper mining community. I have 30 students in my classroom. We love focusing on all aspects of school and this causes a lot of collaboration and movement in my classroom. Sometimes it gets a bit loud, but we love being productive and happy. Don't get me wrong, we work hard, but at the same time we all enjoy communicating with one another and working in teams. I also have a few special needs students. They are a vital part of our class and we love when they are feeling welcome and part of the class.
My Project
Sitting in teacher development classes and teaching for many years has help me to realize how much students desperately need to have alternatives to their seating in the classroom. (As an adult, can you honestly sit in a hard chair all day long?) I have used yoga balls, and I know that those students who get to sit on something other than a hard chair during the day actually focus better.
I want to create an area in my classroom where students can rotate to the futon when they just need to get up and stretch, or need to give themselves a relaxing break while learning.
I see great collaboration happening while students are sitting on the futon. An extra bonus to flexible seating is that scores actually have gone up because students are refreshed and eager to learn in a more comfortable setting.
