My Students

Our school is a title 1, low income, school. Our student's science scores dropped last year, and so we are going to have a science club for our 4th and 5th graders after school to help them get ready for the 5th grade California science test which includes standards from 4th and 5th grade

Our school is trying something new.

We just got authorized as an International Baccalaureate school. We are excited to start a program that is student focused. We are not a charter, but a public school. We want the best for our students even though they are English Learners, at-risk, low income, regular and special education students. This science club, we are bringing back, has no funding, and the teachers are volunteers since it is after-school. We need hands-on materials to help motivate and excite our group to get into and want to learn more about science. The non-consumable / reusable items can also be used by our gifted after-school group. I am also a volunteer for that program as well.

My Project

We would like to have our student's science learning as hands-on as possible to motivate them. The products chosen are from the three science areas we are going to focus on - Life, physical and Earth. The Geodes look like rocks. They can be broken open to revile the sparkling quartz centers inside. The Owl pellets are to learn about the food chain / food web and allows the students to investigate what a barn own eats. The other big focus is on physical science. We will make rockets using models with motors, as well as having the students engineer their fins and tip. They will have to work like a scientist - modifying and checking their design to try and achieve the greatest height.

Our students need this support to help them learn science like scienctest, not just from a book.

They need to experience that science is exciting and fun. We hope to motivate them into wanting to learn more!
