Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year our school district provides a Battle of the Bluebonnets challenge. By reading at least 5 bluebonnet nominee books, 5 students are chosen to participate in the event. This year I would like our students to place top 3 in this event."Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader"- M. Fuller

Our students are the most motivated students I have ever worked with.

They enjoy any after school activities, whether they are academic or athletic. We have a strong UIL program and we are the only elementary in our district to participate in National elementary Honor Society. Our NEHS members are involved in community service through out the year. I would like to add a strong Bluebonnet team to our list of accomplishments. Our staff has always put the students ahead of anything else. They are dedicated individuals that go above and beyond for our students. We are very proud of our campus and our students accomplishments.

My Project

As a Master of Library Science Intern, I will be leading an afterschool book club. I will start with 5th grade the 1st 6 weeks and each 6 weeks I will work my way down the grade levels. We will be asking any student to stay after school to participate in the book club. They will be committed to reading the book of the month and once a week we will meet to discuss the events in the book. The books I am requesting will allow each student to have a copy of the book to read. Once we have completed the book, we will have a catered book talk. Hoping to bring in punch and cookies for the students to enjoy. By doing this we hope that by the time the Battle of the Bluebonnets competition comes around our book club will be prepared for the questions and place in the event. The students will learn it is not just about reading books, it is also about digesting the books and really sharing how you feel about the book in a well mannered lead discussion.

Many of our students are not able to purchase a copy of the books required.

Because these books are popular in our district the public library tends to be out of the books. By providing these copies for our book club, our students are able obtain a copy they can read. By reading the books they are able to participate in the Battle of the Bluebonnet event.
