This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

When was the last time you read a book by a Cambodian-American writer? They're few and far between, right? The experience of living as a first generation American with immigrant parents who survived a genocide (and don't let you forget it!) is one from which we all have something to learn.

My students seek stories as a window into others' experiences, and I know that many of my high schoolers will see startling similarities between themselves and the young voices in Afterparties by Andrew Veasno So.

So's stories are raw, touching, and honest. His characters are feisty in a way that my students will appreciate.
