After School Art Club Celebrating Culture

My students need materials, such as carbon pencils, metallic pencils, watercolors, a bookmaking classroom pack, a Mask of the World set, and a Multicultural DVD series, to explore the diverse cultures of our school community through art making.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help our students share their culture! An after school art club would allow my students the time to explore and share the many cultures we represent. Our school has an annual heritage program, but this year I would like for an art show to be incorporated into the venue.

My school is known for it's eclectic student body ranging from countries including Honduras, Cambodia, Somalia, and Iraq.

I am fortunate to work with such a diverse classroom, as it is unusual for a Tennessee public school. Each day I'm surrounded by a variety of skin colors, brightly patterned hijabs, and exotic names. I feel that I learn so much about these cultures through my students which is why I would like to have a public art show with culture being the theme. This would allow others the opportunity to learn from our children. This festival also serves to bridge the many diverse cultures to our own southern culture. Last year's event included a potluck meal, dance performances, as well as, some art projects based on the cultures in which our school represents. This year's art club would make it possible to make the visual art a more integral part of the event. I also plan to take the student work out of the school and into the community to display a second art show.

My Project

The items such as the drawing pencils and sketch journals will allow the students to explore and record their ideas about their culture. The pencils, watercolor crayons, and paper are higher quality than what we use in our classroom so that they can experience better quality materials and take pride in the results. We will be investigating designs and masks known to be used by specific cultures. The Masks of the World curriculum guide is something that I will be able to continue to use in my classroom. Because of the large number of students I have, our classes are only 45 minutes each. This doesn't allow us to do more extensive projects, such as using clay. Having an Art Club allows several students to work with this medium for additional problem solving projects, that we are unable to do during the school day.

The world is full of assumptions and stereotypes about people of other races and cultures.

This project gives my students the opportunity to share the beauty and truths of their native cultures through visual art experiences. As Angela Schwindt said, "While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about."
